See Chris Robinson's fully modified HF-81 with the entire phono stage gone over underneath, this with a dose of Auricaps and Kiwame carbon film resistors (and a few Atoms thrown in).  Chris preferred the EICO HF-81 to a tweaked Cary "AES"  Super Amp wired in triode.  So did I.  Sadly, he sold this unit before really assessing the phono stage.  And he never addressed the RIAA stage on the top via the main switch assembly. 

The Jury is out on just what an HF-81 phono can do.  Right now, when the HF-81 is in use in my main system, I am running my Cary SLP-70 as a phono stage along with a step-up xformer.
