I have a 1971 BMW Bavaria, and I have found that it is hard to find parts for my car. What I want to do is just get my car to the best running capibilities. What sites or people can I contact to get my car running at it's best. If you have any information for me please contact me At "surferforlife101@hotmail.com" I live in California if that helps. Thanks.

I'm just starting the restoration of a 73 Bavaria and have some questions.

How do you remove the trim and BMW emblems without ruining them? Any special tools needed?

Does anyone know where to get a list of all or most of the car parts for the Bavaria with descriptions?

Thanks

Hey, folks,

Just prowling about looking for parts for my 77 E12 530i and came across this site. When my little, black Panzer is finished, I call him Otto, I'm planning on finding a Bavaria to restore next. It's just nice to see all of you out there that, regardless of model, are so attached to their BMWs. I was hoping I wasn't the only one. Rusted, ratty, wrinkled, whatever, they do speak to one, don't they? This is my second one with ten misguided years of Detroit iron (well, plastic, let's be honest here) between and I can no longer see any reason to own an automobile that came from anywhere but Bavaria. I'm even considering taking mine back to the factory for it's 30th birthday. Talk about obsessive, eh? Shipping charges be damned. Take care of yourselves, everyone, and thanks for letting me know that there are more of us out there than I had originally thought.

I have a 1976, 3.0Si, 4 speed, not running, that I would like to pass on to someone who will restore it or needs the parts for another car. The car is complete and does not have much rust. The only rust-through I know of is a sopt about the size of a quarter on the tip of the right front fender. The exterior is light metalic blue. I think it was called Fjord Blue. The interior is tan leather and the last time I looked it was in good condition except for the driver's seat, which has some seams that need to be re-sewn. The car is equipped with Air Conditioning that was working at the time of the car's demise. It also has factory power windows.

The car's demise occured in 91 when it threw a connecting rod. I know that the "Big Six" is not supposed to do that, but it did. I stored the car thinking that I would restore it myself. Well it has been in the garage for ten years and I am just not getting to it. I am ready to take "best offer" and will throw in 2" of paperwork, including WUNDERCAR from August of 1982 to November of 1986, a 1986 WUNDERCAR Membership Directory, numerous copies of car magazine articles about the E3, a copy of the dealer's brochure for the Bavaria, and some owner's documentation.

Every time I visit a web site devoted to the E3 or see an article about it or the Senior Six Register, I want to restore the car. Unfortunately other responsibilities crowd those dreams out. I now drive a 735i. It is not as quick and agile as the 3.0 was 10 of 20 years ago. But, neither am I.

The car is in my garage in Memphis, Tennessee. Anyone interested can contact me at hga-dag@telocity.com or (901) 276-2721.

My father and I are looking into restoring our '73 Bavaria that we have owned for all of my 16 years. The car is generally a rust bucket but it continues to faithfully start up every time the thought of junking it comes to mind. Most of the rust is surface rust however there is a big concern about floor rust, shock tower rust, right Quarter panel rust near the wheel well. We are really concered about rust on the right frame rail. We hold this car very close to are hearts and we'd rather let it sit than trash it. Do you think there is still hope for this Bavaria?

I have a 1973 Bavaria for sale. I figure rather than sell it through the papers, I would rather sell it to an enthusiast that would appreciate it. The car has spent its life in New Mexico and therefore has no rust. The body is very good with only a few small dents and one fist size dent below the left rear taillight where the bumperette was pushed into it. The engine was completely overhauled, new just about everything ( all documented with pictures and receipts). Also the running gear was overhauled at the same time. There was only about 50K miles put on the car since being overhauled. The paint is bad and the interior; upholstery, etc. needs work. If anybody wants to restore a Bavaria, this is a good solid car to work with. So if any one in your group is interested contact me by phone at (505) 622-8596 or by Email: chesterpp@cableone.net . Thank you, Pete Chester, Roswell, New Mexico.

Have a 72 Bavaria that has been garaged for 12 years. Always a California car (ie no rust). Is orange with black racing strips (think they call it Colorado orange). Original paint and interior both is great condition. The radiator has been replaced. 4 speed. Just drove it from Reno to LA with no problems (no air) except that it was 100 degrees in Mohave. I want to sell. Can anyone tell me the best way to sell? thanks for your help...paul

I just bought a 73 Bavaria after having a 71 2002 I've been restoring for the past four years. When my 02 got rear-ended, I got the Bavaria to drive while I have the 02 in the shop. After just a few days driving around I realize that I have two cars to restore. Each of the models has qualities that make them special.

For the Bavaria I am looking for two front fenders. They are the only bits that are really rusted out. If you can help me out on my addiction it would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Nancy

Hi,

Wow, what a nice site!

I have friend who I'm trying to sponge a '74 Bavaria 3.0S
from and I was wondering if the earlier bumpers could be easily
retrofitted to this model.

I like the earlier bumpers much more and I think I'd like this car
alot more knowing I could make it like I want it.
Thanks!

I have BMW 325 C. since 1995, the car is vert often goes out of order, the Service at National Automobilies (OMAN) tel 00 968-698520 is very poor. BMW is customer focus services, but they are not. the main reason for that is they have staff that has been working for many years.

I hope BMW will look into this matter.

SITE ADDITIONS PII

I have been trying to add some new material to the site - see changes in the Featured Bavarias section, Info/Specs, What's New, Chassis Codes, Site Index, and others. New shots will be revolved in as well as a few new amazing E3s.

I am going to have to break the guestbook up finally as it has just gotten too big to wait for. I had resisted this since I liked the idea of all the comments and posts being on one page (besides the old reader mail page). Alas, it not takes long as a bastard to open and if you are unlucky enough to suffer with a 28.8 modem, you could make dinner while waiting! So, the guestbook will be divided in three parts by date.

At last! I KNEW there had to be a Bavaria site out there somewhere!
I just came into possession of my grandparents' '74 3.0s. I've known the car since it was purchased (in Santa Monica, CA) and picked up (in Munich). I learned to drive in that car, and now at the tender age of 38, it's MINE. My grandfather took great care of it, and I intend to do the same. I will be checking back here periodically for advice (already found some great suggestions for the overheating problem.

It's so good to know there are others out there who appreciate this beauty! (The car, not me. My family thinks I'm lovely, thank you very much.)

THE BMW BAVARIA DEFENSE MECHANISM

Thanks for the remarks, Manfred! I know I have been rather slow getting revisions on this site; indeed, I have some shots of a few owners with featured E3s but have not had time to get them up. In addition, coming soon is the story of Bret and his crazy brother with the 5 cylinder Bav! It's too twisted to even begin to explain.

Once interesting feature that was added on the 15th of March or so, was a "visitors statistics" record to see where the E3 loons are viewing the page from... interesting statistics as we have had visits in the last few days from Lithuania, Finland, Turkey, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Norway, Switzerland as well as the usual Germany, Canada, and Australia. I actually receive mail from all over the World as well. New statistics can be viewed by clicking the little blue icon on the lead off page.

For all East Coast and Midwest BMW E3 fiends, there will be an E3 SpringFest gathering in South Carolina coming in May. Usually about 12-16 E3s show up...it's both frightening and amazing rolled into one! Email me for details if interested. I plan on getting my 72 Bavaria down there if I start praying early...

Hi Folks,
I just found your web address in the September 98 Roundel magazine and could kick myself for not viewing it earlier. You certainly did a great job! Very interesting and in part amusing.
Having owned numerous 2002's I grew into Bavarias just because someone didn't like his and wanted to get rid of his 2.8L (in Germany) which my son later rolled and I had lots of good spares left from then on.
Naturally, others followed. I still have a 76 2002, 73 2500 manual, 2500 automatic, 76 3.oSi,and 73 3.0CSi. All of them are enjoyed and driven now and then.
My wife's car is the most modern in the family: an 88 528e.
Do think we are hooked?
You certainly influenced my decision to join the Senior Sixes.
Thanks for sharing your web site.

After wrecking a '72 2500 E3(yes it is possible when you are 19 years old and do not have a brain) somewhere late '70, I had the luck to find myself a 3.0Li with a leak in the haedgaskit big as a river. After a repair, what took me 4 weekends,I had the luck to enjoy this beauty for 3 years
without any problem, the only hickup was every visit to the petrol station, man did that thing burn a hole in you wallet,
especialy if you have a foot size 45 and are not afraid of speed. At the time I lived near the german border and motorway's there are leagal racetracks with no speed limed so 200 Km/h+ is no problem . I never enjoyd a car as mutch as that E3 and the most stupid thing I did was selling it for not enough monney(still brainles).
Nowe with brains but no money I bumped in your webside and the tears begin to roll I hope that you NEVER will stop with giving me and others a lot of happy times, maybe one day I will own my biggest favorite a E3 3.3Li in diamond bleu with all the extra's on it.

I recently bought a 1973 Bavaria with 79000 original miles. polaris with blue cloth, 4 spd, coupe alloys, new tires, new exhaust, new clutch, updated cooling system, 84 head. No visible rust. Onlt rust I can find is just surfacing on the shock towers. The car runs and drives beautifully, burns no oil, and goes like stink. I paid $4000 Canadian. What do you guys think?? Let me know. Just one question. After I have taken the speed up (around 90 mph or so) and then returned to normal speed, the car smells of gas. Leaning out the carbs has helped, but not entirely. Any guesses? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

The site looks great. I'm in need of some advice on how to fix my blower. I've check all the obvious things: ground, fuse, wires and I've think I've narrowed it down to the little switch on the actual arm that you move to turn the fan on. I was just at the salvage yard and it's a pain in the butt to get that thing out. I'm glad I didn't try it on mine first. As I was trying to get the thing out I noticed that all the switches are all a part of one unit.
Is it possible to only get the little resistor that I think I need or am I going to have to yank the whole thing?
Life is pretty miserable in the morning with out the fan blowin in air to defog the windshield.
I'd great appreciate any advice on how to fix it.
Thanks,

Evan

Excellent web site

I came across your page while searching the net for front wheel bearing grease info for Mercedes (I plan to switch to synthetic and was looking for reports of other's experience).

I own 2 123 series MBZ and am a member of an excellent Mercedes Elist discussion group. I thought your Bavaria site was awesome and wanted to let you know. I have always like that model. I plan to share the link to your site with some Mercedes folks hoping someone will be inspired to do something similar for 123 Mercedes.

Thanks for the good work.

To the loon that wants a new exhaust... You have my sympathy! Indeed, I am in the same boat even as I type this.

There is a far cheaper and more simple alternative to the OEM route, however. This realized after consulting with many Bav and E9 owners.

Simply go down to your nearest, dependable, custom exhaust shop and have them MAKE you one! YES! Believe it or not, this is FAR cheaper than purchasing from any catalog and you can specify how you want it. In fact, you wont believe how reasonable this option is.

If you find a shop that is lame, move on to another. I actually hung around while the guy was doing it for my 2002 and he gave me a big discount just for being interested!

Go ask around... You'll be pleasantly surprised.

just bought a '72 3.0 bavaria...
never had a bmw car before, only ever even drove a 2002 once.
have had 5 bmw motorcycles though...
have forgiven the cars for the comment "how come you put a bmw marque on a motorcycle?"
... after many years of vengeful passive-aggressive comment to bmw car drivers, "bmw makes cars?!"
now i see i picked the one that still annoys them!!!

i'm looking forward to bringing my new prize to restored shape... glad to now be in the totally new-to-me world of bavarias!

I've always been into cars. As a senior in high school (which was about 10 years ago) I came across a Bavaria and traded my 81 Malibu for it, as the Malibu was in much better shape. The BMW was beat up but I nevertheless fell in love with it. Some redneck owner it prior and he put on one of those cherry bomb mufflers on it. I think he did the right thing. The 6 cylinder sounded positively viscious. Unfortunately due to a lapse in judgement I sold it to a local BMW nut. Ever since then I have always wanted another and am presently searching for one. : )

Hi, Im a bav owner since summer '99. Always wanted an e3. And I always kind of dreamed of the way of acquiring it the way I did - since I was a child: From the car-wreckager/recycler. That's what I did. My Franz-Joseph, as I call him (after Franz-Joseph Strauss, the Bavarian prime minister of the decade of his production), is still in a good condition and came to this place because of minor cosmetic probems and bad drinking behaviour. Such consumption isn't wanted nowadays anymore - to tolerate it, you have to be a tolerant freak.
I wrote a story in German

Great website-I'm glad I found this.
Now that I can finally tune my 72 Bavaria (I just replace the point plate to take care of Tach Bounce) I noticed that the previous owner had messed up the vacuum advance/retard system. I also have Weber carbs, so the vacuum source may differ. Does anyone know what the timing vs. rpm curves should be for this engine? I took readings with the vacuum system detatched, then attached, and I think it it incorrect.

I have a 72 E3 and was looking to put some new wheels on it.
Everywhere I seem to look, the wheels are for 7's 5's and
3's. There are usually only a few that claim to fit the E3's.
I just need some clarification because the E3's have 5 studs
on them, so shouldn't any BMW 5 stud wheel fit? If not, why not?
Say for instance in Bavarian Autosport, they have some that
fit certain years of 5 series Z3's, 3 series... Shouldn't any
5 stud wheel fit? Thanks in advance for any info I can get here...

I have an original English language BMW Dealer Service Manual for E3s
(Bavarias,2500.2800,3.0s,3.0si.3Li, etc) I purchased this new
in 1984 for $100.00 from the dealer. It is a comprehensive service and repair manual available. It
contains 640 pages of technical information pertaining to maintaning and repairing these cars. Every aspect of servicing is covered from
engine rebuilding, transmission rebuilding, rear end, body repairs, electrical repairs, air conditioning etc.
It is for sale for $75. The two binders are high quality glossy pages, like new. The graphics are of high quality and there are many
illustrations.

The Worth of the Mighty Bavaria

Brent, it's not that your car is worth less or that you have a useless rustbucket on your hands; it's the fact that most BMW lunatics who own these fine machines get them for CHEAP and expect this...

Most normal God fearing brickbats dont know the difference between a Bavaria and a Monkey Paw. And if they did, they sure aint wantin' to pay anything for it! That's what makes it such a strange situation. The owners WANT their rustbuckets to be worth THOUSANDS, yet they DONT want to pay hundreds!

While your lovely car might appear to be a dream, when it comes right down to it, it's not going to get 5,000...unless it's a damn perfect E3. And even then, I'd try to talk you down to 900.

Would you take 950?

heh.. By the way, would love to put you in the site! Drop me a mail!

I advertised a '73 Bavaria in great condition back in late october. Looks as though even the enthusiasts that answered my e-mail want to first tell me that my car is'nt worth what I'd asked (5k) and then to send photos! I always thought german car fanatics were arrogant and now I know it! The car is no longer for sale. I think the car is worth more than anyone would even offer and I'm not even a BMW nut! I like ITALIAN cars! I aquired the car through odd circumstances and now plan to keep it.

1973 Bavaria For Sale!

I have a 1973 Bavaria for sale. I'm the third owner and I bought it from my best friend. He only owned it for about 8 months and put a considerable amount of work into it including 2 new tires, new oil routing tubes (internal block ?) extensive tune up actually done by visiting BMW corporate mechanic- from Germany, employed by BMW.

It has the Weber conversion, new engine compartment seals, new voltage regulator, only visible surface rust is under back windshield and superficial surface rust under spare tire. The drivers side front fender has either been replaced or repaired(rust or collision-?) but car is perfectly straight and tracks normal. has been repainted (silver) but poorly. Has sunroof, 4 speed, blue vinyl and air (non functional but intact) I'd say the car is between a 1 and a 2 condition accordingly and worth between $5k and $6k. I've had the car for about ten months and will only sell to an enthusiast. NO BOY-RACERS OR PUNKS WHO WILL MODIFY IN ANY WAY!

It's in great shape but enthusiast can easily perfect it.

I'm asking $5000.oo/ o.b.o.

For sale 1973 bavaria. $1000 or make offer. Engine has been replaced by someone else. New engine is injected. But it also needs a ring job or replacement. Low compression in one cylinder and it fails the Colorado emissions test. It's silver/gray with minimal rust (driver door back corner). The interior is very good and as I'm sure you all know, it drives great. It's beautiful and comfortable, but I can't keep it. Four speed manual. Email for photos.

I bought it off a lawyer who insisted on calling it a Barvaria and the mechanic called it a Balvaria. It is, however, neither.

Mr. Holsten:

I require your sage counsel.

I have the chance to buy either a 1985 Ford cube
van or a fjord blue 72 Bavaria.

The cube van is freshly painted glossy white, apparently
by some nitwit, as it most closely resembles a brick of
vanilla ice cream that was rolled in a gravel pit or
a trash dumpster that was dipped in chunky white gravy.

The vehicle pitches, belches, and heaves and I can see the
road through holes in floor.

The 72 Bavaria is being offered for sale by someone
who I would characterize as a boob or bozo. In my country,
he would be boiled in oil for his transgressions of
normal human behavior. In his presence, I am tempted
to affix a giant C-clamp to his head such that his
affliction might be squeezed out in some way.

I am heavily medicated in order to reduce my
puerile fascination and obsessive compulsivity
for rusty old German cars.

Would the 72 Bavaria be a good car for me?

Copies of the E9 dealer manual are available. The cost is $85.00 plus shipping. If you work on these cars yourself these are a must. Buy one for yourself, or buy one for your mechanic, it save him alot of headaches. The manual is over 600 pages covering everything from engine rebuilding to body part relpacement. $10,500 72 Bavaria for sale? Indeed.

Journey to the Featured Bavarias section of this site to see a new addition, Sammy Haroon's 72 Bavaria. It is one of the nicest E3s out there with 45,000 original miles and still on the original paint. It's obviously been garaged kept.

Alas, ole Sammy wants to sell this beast, claiming he "doenst have time to drive it." Seems he bought a new 2000 Bimmer to keep him busy. Evidently, he wants to put a hefty down payment on the 2000 judging by the asking price! It IS a nice car, however, but....

Hi there

I am really impressed with your site and the high quality of information you have for all the people who are interested in Bavaria and other E3 models.I have a question and I would like your opinion which I consider of greatImportance to me.

I have ben looking for a clean drivable 3.0si for a while and eventually I found one close to where I live and it used to be owned by a doctor who performed an engine rebuilt on the car at 100.000 miles. He is the owner from the begining and the car currently has 43000 miles. He claims that the rebulid process was performed at a qualiy BMW shop and he showed me the complete paper work.

The thing now is that he is asking $2900 for the car firm. The only thing that the car appears to need now is work on the AC and I do not know how much that will cost me.Otherwise the car has few rust spots two or three at the front doors. The question is- is this car worth this price and would you advise to buy a car like this following an engine rebulid.Your opinion regarding this matter is deeply appreciated.

Thank you
Best regards

Greetings. I'm a Bavaria neophyte considering a 72 for purchase. It has about 120K actual (alleged) miles. Main faults are a bad differential mount (rubber is rotted) and the A/C leaks down about two weeks after a recharge. Are these "tip of the iceberg" faults? Anything else I should be wary of? Thanks for anyone's advice. Super site!!

I have in my possession an original Dealer Service Manual for E9s (Bavarias,2500.2800,3.0s,3.0si.3Li, 2800 cs, etc,) I purchased this new back in 1980 for $100.00 from Bimmer Parts. It is the most comprehensive service and repair manual available for these cars. It contains 640 pages of technical information pertaining to maintaning and repairing these cars. Every aspect of servicing is covered from engine rebuilding, transmission rebuilding, rear end, body repairs, electrical repairs, air conditioning etc.
I need to know if there are individuals interested in acquiring these before I embark upon having it professionally reproduced. The quality would be high quality glossy pages, pre punched so that it could be placed in a binder. The graphics are of high quality and ther are many illustrations.
Please let me know if you are interested and I will pursue a printer to begin the process.

My ding-dong brother pushed the gas pedal on my 73 bav that has been stored since 81. It's cosmetically perfect, but of course, in intensive care mechanically. I have a great mechanic working to fix the 4-5 inch plate that had broken. The pedal was pushed while still frozen while hybernating for 19 years. This car has only 22k on it and started and idles wonderfully. The mechanic isn't sure what do to to fix it correctly. I want and need to have this car A-1 because..well I'm sorta in lovw with it. Also the fan runs all the while running. Is that normal. Please help!!!! Thanks alot!

I am going to look at a 72 Bavaria to purchase. I have looked over it briefly and the dash has no cracks, interior looks perfect, no obvious rust, paint has a few chips, looks garage kept because paint(a dark burgundy) has not faded. Seller says its mechanically sound. I am waiting to test drive it. He's asking $3300. Is that too much? I have also found a 74 Bavaria rotting away but could posibly be a parts car. Are the parts on the two interchangeable.

Evan - You didn't say what year your E3 is, here's how I did it last year by myself on my 1973 3.0sa with air conditioning. Please don't be insulted if I include the obvious:

Open Hood.

Drain Coolant via small plug (10mm?)passenger side, rear of radiator. If you really want to get all the old coolant out drain the block, too, big nut towards rear passenger side of block.

Take off the three hoses (top, bottom & overflow)also Transmission Coolant hoses, if applicable.

Take off the engine driven fan, the one on the end of the water pump.

The bracket that actually holds the radiator in is toward the upper right (looking from sitting in the car)rear part of the radiator, it's held in by two small bolts (11mm? 13mm?) Take those out & the bracket & set aside.

Radiator is now free & should just lift out.

Hope this helps, good luck. You may want to get a Haynes manual, you'll like it much better than the Chiltons, or the other white cover one, if still available. Should be available from Classic Motorbooks. Thanks for appreciating these magnificent machines.

73,

Colin

Great site, generally if your not the owner of a 2002 - web info is a problem. I have a 1969 2500 (& love it) which is needing some attention in the gearbox area. If possible both physically and dollar wise I'd like a 5 speed. Any comments or suggestions would be mostly appreciated.

Nice site, It's good to know there are other people as fanatical about this car as I am. I have a 72 Bav and I just traded a old Audi for a 73 3.0 S . Both Cars are real nice however they each have cracked windshields and the 3.0 s has a leaky front oil seal. The big nut on the balancer looks like it takes a lot! or torque to remove ,Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to take it off? gestions

I have for sale in Glenwood Springs Colorado 2 BMW Bavaria's.
1972 Blue interior/exterior. Mechanically very sound, engine performs excellent however it needs a new water pump and alternator. I have started alot of body work, so much of it is primer but it is almost ready to be painted. I originally bought it for parts for my 73, but the interior is so clean in this car and the motor so strong I decided to start restoring this one as well.
1973 Green exterior/ Brown leather interior. Body very sound, interior very clean and in good shape, plenty of new leather has been added to this car. Up until about a week ago it was extremely mechanically sound, but for now it will not start.
I am willing to accept any reasonable offer for both cars or possibly one without the other. The Blue one however comes with 4 extra doors, extra stock rims and loads of other parts from door trim to Intrument clusters etc. too many to mention here.
For further details contact chadleny@usa.net
I have a digital camera and can produce pictures upon request.
Decided to focus all my restoring $$$$ to My International Scouts instead.
Started advertising this car online today 06/21/00
thanks

Editors Note: Below is a post from the SSR mailing list by the esteemed Al Taylor, E3 racing loon and parts maven (seen in this site). He is currently touring Europe in hand-to-mouth fashion. Thought it amusing:

Hello....

Today I am in Munich, which is a great town.

I figured I would go see the BMW plant and Museum. I took the underground and spent about 30 min. in the museum. Some nice pieces but nothing too extraordinary.

I ask the girl at the counter if I could tour the Mobile Traditions shops/showroom. Her answer was no. Her delivery and tone sent me out the door in a hurry and in the door of BMW A.G., there I asked the receptionists about Mobile Traditions. She said it was not located at the plant but gave me a map.

It was a perfect day for the maybe 4k walk. I get to Mobile traditions, which had all manor of BMW, Mini; Ferrari etc parked outside. A real gearhead place. The receptionist was within sight of several old racecars on display, I ask her if I can look around. She says no.

I am not going to travel thousands of miles to hear no. I explain, in German, that I have a collection of NOS parts for Neue Range sedans and would like to talk to someone about either selling them or lending them to BMW for remanufacture or reproduction.

She makes about 6 phone calls. A fellow comes down and says the man I need to talk to is out of the country and gives me his email. I talk to this guy for 2 min. and he asks if I would like to look around!

The stuff they have there is unbelievable.

Old race cars, F1, F2, 2 liter sports racers, Gr 5 M1's Touring Cars...

3 328's including a original MM car that just won the Mille Miglia retro last week, 507's, 2002 Turbo's CSL's.

Over 100 Motorcycles

This place was amazing. My host showed me every floor. He really made my week.

The most impressive car was the M Coupe LM car that ran at Sebring, absolutly stunning.

I hate I did not get this fellows name as he is coming to Oktoberfest with 2 others from MT.

crap out of time

Mr. Holsten:

I have visited your site occasionally over
the course of the past few months.

At first, I passed through your site and felt like
a prancing colt darting through fresh wildflowers
in sun-splashed meadows. The freshness of the site
was invigorating.

As days passed, the material in your site grew
stale and when I visited it was like reaching under
the refrigerator and pulling out some half decayed
morsel that had given me succor in the distant past.

Is there noone who can revive this site that
was once so promising? Am I to pass my remaining
days so unfulfilled?

I feel so empty.

I have a '75 3.0 si and am looking to replace those ugly US bumpers with the older european style. Can this be done? If so, how? Is there anyone out there that has front and back bumpers for sale. Not looking for anything too outrageously expensive. I'm in Seattle,WA and am always looking for parts and cars around here.
I also just purchased injectors for a 1977 530i for very cheap on e-bay and assumed that they would work on my car because they both have L-jet injector systems. Is my assumption correct? thanks.

And on the 8th day, God was confused...

http://12.16.160.65/bavaria/for_sale.htm (hit more info)

Someone must journey to this page and attempt to employ reason and logic. I have given up. The sounds within have done something, something that I can only report below, in a post I left amongst the BMW malcontents. I must quote:

"Alas, I could not reach the ninth magic window... After seven, things started to cave in over here... you mention the transcendental loop quality... it was a goal that I never met... I must have catapulted forward to something Thoreau or Emerson could never have even imagined; yes, nothing in Nature could have brought about this vision.... No, we would have to wait a good many years, to something more akin to a Ken Kesey-Dr. John Lily Float Tank experience... Although I had taken no more than 10 or so aspirin during the day to relieve the horror of the Deere Motor, I felt more like I had submerged myself into a peyote nightmare, complete with visions of my Grandmother, now dead for 12 years, playing Cricket with an army of 12AX7 tubes and a rug store run by Indians in Ramsey, NJ, all hosting a slow drag contest with two Dauphines, a Skoda, and an AMC Javelin, piloted by my third grade Social Studies teacher....

I am now in a more supine position.... my hand near the mouse, yet my head adrift from its moorings... Can nine BE THAT FAR AWAY? Did Lennon really kill Paul? DO the paper towels have the floral pattern?

Where is my pocketbook?"

$70 for both plus shipping from Riverside, California. No links for the front as the bolts were bent and had to cut off.
However, for additional $20, I'll send a brand new set with poly bushings (ADDCO brand) that I bought at PepBoys, or you can buy them yourself.

I've got a 74 Bavaria that I must (regrettable) sell. My problem is, I don't know what it's worth. Last year, I put $2100 into a new interior, and have easily spent $5000 in mechanical repairs. The interior is pristine, except for a few cracks in the dashboard. The exterior is not a thing of beauty, and it needs some minor things like a new trunk lock, window seals etc. Anybody have ANY idea of where to start pricing, or find out where I can go? Please respond via email at kglidden@imsconsult.net

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am currently staying with my parent-in-laws, and they have
two BMW Bavarias. Currently they are just sitting in the
driveway, and not being used. The in-laws have too many other
things going on, so the BMWs are for sale. One is a '72 Burgundy
stick and the other is a '74 blue automatic. The blue one runs
and the red one did before it was disassembled. The in-laws
also have lots of spare parts, an engine and some alloy rims.
These cars would be good for parts because the exteriors need
some work. Unfortunately, these cars are located in northern
New Mexico. Please let me know if there is any interest. I
can post pictures on the web if desired.

Dearest Rajeet,

I understand your sympathies. Indeed, I have almost become them... You see, I just now buckled down and purchased a Camry to compliment my aging German shitbox. This was decided after a brief discussion with a Mr. Marty Roach, who has enough antique E models to start a small rust-O-link parts bartering ring. The man can barely lie down in bed at night without moaning; I have heard rumors concerning his nightmares and he has been asked to be part of several studies at Johns Hopkins.

I now ride in comfort without my AAA card pasted to the steering wheel. Mr. Roach is not so lucky; he is considering using a riding mower for transportation in his home state of New Jersey.

Rajeet, you need a site?

I was wondering if there a web site for four
Toyota Camry sedans? They are a splendid car
to which more people should aspire. Snappy
styling combined with solid engineering.

Why would any sane individual consume his
free time fixing up a rusty old German car?

This Kelly Holsten character seems to have
several loose screws. I would be pleased
greatly if the citizens of this fine
country would cook him in boiling oil.

As the former owner of a burgundy red 75 3.0si, seeing your website brought back some great memories. I'll probably dig out the old photos of a cross-country trip; for some reason, the BMW seems to be in most of them. Keep up the good work.

Hi Folks.
Wonder if any of you out there has a Bav with vinyl top?
I've been thinking on fitting it on one of my Bavarias right now under restoration.
Hade to redo the entire upholstery due to a schrew-up at the paintshop, so instead of fitting it with the original darkgrey/black interiour (what imagination they have, those germans...) I've redone it in black and cream. The car is Malaga red, and think a cream colored top would go fine on it. How does the chrome trim fits for holding it on place?

How common was the vinyl roof option anyway? Havent seen one here.

I have a 1972 Bavaria with several interesting items: original window sticker, owners' manual, most all receipts, many extra original parts. I would like to find a good home for my car, would you or anyone in your club have any interest? The car is in Temecula, California and I can send pics.

Just checking on the ole guestbook and noticed some interesting posts. First and foremost, I would rather have a bullet in my left temple then listen to Lawrence Welk for over 30 seconds. And that is giving it 25 from ones...

Seems ole Marty Roach has been up to no good as usual, posting a six paragraph entry under my name in the Welk newsgroup. Needless to say, I sent a small "special package" to Mr. Roach at his NJ home. May he open it on white carpet (for more on Mr. Roach go to http://members.aol.com/e3%20bavaria/marty.htm).

Many thanks to John Trask for submitting that Tech Tip. I am going to updating the Tech Tips page soon, and that will be indexed.

Also, thanks to Bernd Rosenberger for posting the newsgroup address for the E3 discussion. Looks like a worthwhile link from what I saw.

Thanks for the continued input. I try to look at it weekly. Indeed, it sometimes a better source of entertainment than Thursday night "Must SEE TV." Then again, what isnt?

Lieber Herrn Holsten,

I like very much your website for the BMW E3 saloon.
I live in Nuestadt, in the vicinity of Salzburg.
We see not very many of the E3 any more, but they are
very beautiful cars. My father had a 3.0S when I was
young.
I see that you are also a great fan of Mr. Lawrence Welk.
Ausgeseichnet! My father had many of his tapes in the
3.0S. Das war wunderbar Musik!

Best Wishs,
Klaus

I thought I add some info here on a little tech item that I haven't seen mentioned in the tech tips section. I've owned my '74 since '76 and one of the things I always had trouble (until I completed modifications) were/was with the manual window lift mechanisms. It seems that they were designed with "pot metal" rivets. Probably because they wouldn't require lubrication. The problem is that they tend to work loose, and when they do the crank doesn't work anymore and you're stuck with a window that won't go up. The fix as I found was fairly straight forward. First remove the inside door panel. To do this, remove the chrome plated plastic insert in the door handle. Its held on with one screw and and had a little tab on the side nearest the door. Be careful with all this stuff because its getting hard to replace, BMW still stocks them but their expensive.

Once the insert is out remove the screw fastening the top of the handle to the door. There are two more screws in the bottom of the arm, once there're out remove the entire armrest. Next remove the window crank. Take out the plastic insert by pushing the retainers from the back side of the crank near the inside end. The end nearest the knob has a little tab that hold it in place. The door handle works kind of the same way. Before you remove it use a grease pencil to mark where the tip is on the door panel so you can reinstall it at the same angle. You can see the tab projecting from the back of the handle, push it out with the blade of a a screw drive from the back. Remove both screws in the door handle and the window crank. Next take out the door lock button by unscrewing it (This is a no brainer). Now remove the small trim screws on the top front and rear of the door panel. The panel is held in place with a number of plastic push in clips. They are fairly easy to remove. I use a large flat blade screw driver. If you gently pull on the panel along the edge you can see where it is being held. slip the screw driver between the door and the panel, as close to the clip as you can and twist gently, being careful not to scratch the paint. The clip should pop out of it's retainer. Work your way all around the door, and when the last clip is loose you can lift the door panel up so that the aluminum trim strip at the top disengauges from the door. If the door hasn't been apart before (rare) there should be a plastic sheet covering the inside of the door.

This sheet is important because the door gets wet inside, the plastic keeps the water away from the fiberboard backing of the door panel, and prevents water from running into the car along the bottom edge of the panel. The window lift is held inplace with three bolts which are visible right around where the crank shaft protrdes through the inner door panel. Also visible is the far end of the lift arm which is normally engaged in the long slot on the bottom of the window frame. (It may have come loose however) Remove the three bolts and work the entire mechanism so that the retainer in the end of the lifting arm slides toward the end of the slot in the window frame. When it reaches that point it can be remomed from frame and with a little manuevering pulled through one of the access holes in the door. Once you've got the arm out, the reason for the failure should be fairly obvious, what happens is one of the rivets had come loose so that the short intermediate arm is disconnected from the rest of the assembly. (You may have to retrieve all the parts from where they have fallen down inside the door.) This is how you fix the rivet. File the staked end of the rivet down until it it nearly flush when the assembly is put back into its proper position. Carefully drill a 13/64ths hole through the center of the rivet and thread the hole with a 1/4-20 tap. It is importand that you didn't file the rivet down too much because you don't want it to bind whe you run a large panhead or mushroom head screw into the hole to hold the rivet in place. You can always file it down a little more to adjust the fit once you've tested the fit.) Once you're satisfied that it fits without too much play and without binding, cross stake the end of the screw ith a chistle. Once you've made this repair you probably only have three more to do. (The ones I have monified this way never needed any more attention.) Now while you've got the door apart its a good time to look around inside. Vacuum out the bottom of the door. There are two drain holds down there and if they're plugged water can't get out and that means RUST.

(Its a good ideal to check these holes from the bottom from time to, and clear them with a screw drive if they're plugged.) Lube any pivot points in the door latch mechanism with white grease or motor oil and make sure every thing works smoothly. You may find "extra bolts" inside, they aren't really extras they may be left over when they were dropped and not retrieved during the vehicles assembly, but more likely they have come loose from the window frame or other part of the door. Look around long enough with a flashlight and your detective work should reveal their proper location and function. Re install the lift mechanism. Lube the long slot in the bottom of the window frame with white grease. Run the window up and down a few times to be sure it's working properly, and check the door latch and locking mechanisms too. Also be sure the door closes properly if you have replaced any bolts that may have come loose (you should also check them all for tightness while you're in there.) The window frame is adjusted with the bolts closest to the bottom, through the rear end of the door under the plastic caps. If you found loose or missing screws, check to see that the top of the window from lines up with the top of the rear door when both are closed. Once you're satisfied everything fits properly and works smoothly, its time to put everything back together. Put a narrow bead of weather strip adhesive around each hole on the inside of the door, if the original plastic is in good shape reuse it, being sure the holes for the door panel clips line up, press it into place. If its not reusable cut a new piece of plastic to fit. You will only hve to make a small slit to allow the door release and window crank shaft to pass through, Install the crank arm, (don't forget the conical spring it goes being behind the door panel on the window crank shaft, the panel clips should go through without any resistance on their own. Push each clip into place working your way around the door. If you broke any during removal, you can get along without a few, but they should still be available. Install the crank arm, door latch arm, two trim screws, and the inserts for the window crank and the door handle. Finally reinstall the arm rest (a bit of a trick to find the holes inside the door for the long screws, get them all started before snugging it up so you can see what you
re doing. An awl works well for probing for the threaded plastic inserts in the inside door panel it you are having a hard time.) Once there all started. Pull all the screw up snug, and replace the chrome insert cover, being careful not to over-tighten it and crack the threaded post. End of story!

I just thought I'd drop you a line. I'm an old time Bavaria owner. I bought my 74 used in 76 and had it ever since. I owned a 2002 which I bought new in '69. I don't know exactly why I still have the Bavaria except that I just keep spending "a little money" to keep it running, and once I've spent the money, I can't let my investment go to waste, so I spend a little more, and 23 years later I'm still driving the same car. I do all of my own work, and I know quite a bit about the mark so. If you want to hear more from me let me know. Best regards John Trask

BMW Identification

The Official BMW Website www.bmw.com has the attached picture labeled as a 2002. This isn't correct is it?? Can you tell me what model this is? Notice the 2 louvered vent type things on the left rear roof brace - is this unique to a specific model?

Thanks!

Hello, first I'd like to say you all have great taste in automobiles. My questions pertains to the automatic transmission in my 74'Bavaria. Well the transmission have finally taken it's last ride and I wanted to know if you had any suggestions(say a 4 speed manual?)
Jorge M. Vasquez <nhennekes@hotmail.com>
- Friday, June 25, 1999 at 00:25:30 (CDT)

We just recently purchased a used BMW. The paperwork says this car is a 1979 Bavaria. It has a carboretor 6-cyl with a 4-speed manual transmission.

It is also a coupe not a 4-door so it would be my understanding that it is not a Bavaria even though the car says Bavaria on the back panel. Under the hood the car says it says 320/A. As I am new to all of this I just do not know what to think.

Other numbers include ABE 9637 and the VIN# *WBA8110006923486* according to the state and as I see it,
it reads VIN# *WB18110006923486*

Can you please help me figure out what to ask people for parts for? I have the idea that this is anywhere from a 1971 to a 1979?? I think I am leaning more toward 1974 at this point...

Where would I look for a carburetor rebuild kit?

Thank you for any help you might give.

74 Bavaria FS

I have been busy this spring with the birth of my first child. Needless to say he looks marvelous traveling in
the back of the Bavaria.

We have just completed a new paint job and body work on the car and boy
does it look fabulous. Actually we are now going to post the car for sale.
We have another Bavaria to rebuild and this one is too fabulous to sit
around.

If you know of someone who may be interested in this car, '74 Bavaria,
95,000 original miles, impecably clean interior, new paint (original baby
blue colour), and light body work completed this past month. This car runs
great, I love it but we have already four cars in our two driver family.

I live in Vancouver, B.C. and can post pictures of the car to interested
parties. Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Great site! Just found it . Great to know I'm not the only
INSANE person out there. I have a 73 Baveria with 122,000
daily driven for the last 7 years. As a former Bosch
Service Center Technician that spent 75% of my time fixing BMW's
I can tell you that they are rock solid and dependable. I paid $ 1300.00 dollars
for my baby to the original owner that picked her up in munich
summer '73. It had 93,000 miles when i got her. It's Great having no
electrical or computer problems. This car costs me about $ 600 dollars
a year in total maintenance, I laugh at the people that can't afford a Bavaria.
I Can't afford not to drive one.

Guys, Ive just recently got on the net and have spent many sleepless nights searching for intelligent life out "there". Its been like trying to find life on other planets, Im home!! - its great to find a bunch of people? so crazy for the "old girls", like myself. I presently own 5 Bm's - 1973 3.0Si / 1977 3.0Si / 1976 3.0L / a very rare Sth African 2004 sedan and the latest is an E28 executive (fully loaded)christ the registration costs are killing me-may have to sell the wife and kid into bondage to pay the next round (but as Ive told the wife I dont drink (while I drive), I dont smoke (One car does), I dont go out after loose women (they dont think E3's are "real" B.M.W's)but I do go out in good (and/or) FAST cars. I'll email some facts and pictures of the old girls a.s.a.p. -To William Gau - how is the Turbo going? - sorry to spoil your thunder but there is already a THUNDER down UNDER, My 73'3.0Si has been running an IHI turbo and engine and management mods and 5 speed close ratio gearbox (ex 2002 turbo)since 1986(email/pics to come). It still astounds me to this the acceleration it is capable of in the 110 to 160klm/h (70 to 100 mph) bracket in top gear(always guarantees to send a tingle up the spine that turns into a manic grin at the head). I've loved E3s since the first time I saw one in the flesh in 1970 - to me they are the true start of todays "B.M.W", stunningly proportioned and styled they look good from all angles (something that cannot be said about some later models - A lot of the SO CALLED "BMW enthusiasts" out should realise that if it wasn't for the E3 there may not be a BMW today and if it had of survived it may have been a rebadged ROVER. CIAO guys will drop an email, keep up the good fight, very nice bunch of cars, hope you dont mind i've down loaded some pics to add to my screen saver - who wants to work on the computer? My compliments on your website. Are you considering a Bavaria list or a wantad section for site?

I am a past Bavaria owner and have admired them since my father bought one new in 1972. I sold mine, a '71 automatic because of the transmission (I wanted a standard) and because it got terrible gas mileage around town. I am thinking that a pre-ugly bumber car with a later injected engine and a five speed would be very nice.

Has anyone installed an 528e or 325i engine in a Bavaria. I know these are small block engines, but they might result in a very fuel efficient car with reasonable perfomance. The earlier Bavaria don't weigh much more than the e30 cars and are lighter than the 528e.

Alpina Rims?

I was just checking out your page and wanted to tell you it looks great. I really dig the formatt.

I'm just about to get a 72 Bavaria and I want to find some Alpina's to go with it. What would be the best way for me to track some down and roughly how much am I looking at for the purchase?

I'm guessing that it's going to be pretty expensive.

If you could help me out that would be great. I'm sure that you are bombarded with tons of questions so whenever you have a chance to write back would greatly be appreciated.

Hope to hear from you soon.

1978 BMW 3.0s for Sale!

Are you in search of a BMW 3.0s (1978) or do you know someone who is? I'd like to sell mine. It's, to some extent, in a good condition. There are some problems with the cooling and something on the front of the undercarriage vibrates only when you brake light (it could have to do something with the brakes).

But the engine runs very well and the interieur looks well too. There is hardly any rust.

Price: ~$3000.

The car is located in Switzerland, Zürich.

Thanks,

Recently purchased a beautiful (almost) rust free 75 3.0Si. w/ all the fixin's for about $3k. It's mechanically beautiful, has new radiator and '84 cylinder head. 4-spd. Leather int. A/C is shot. etc..

But I'm stumped on how in the heck to remove the chrome from under the rear air vents.... Got a small hole under there. Found a relatively rust free 73 (I think) bav. down the road... owner willing to part out. Is it at all possible to switch up the bumpers?

Anyway, I'm sure you will be hearing more from me as I do battle with the hungry rust creature.

Thanks for the help!

HI. I bought a '74 Bavaria in August 98 for 800 bucks. It had 84K original miles on it, a good looking body and a great looking dash, the only problem with it being the long amount of time it spent parked in a garage (about ten years). Anyway, towing it home seemed to have killed it (it ran before towing, it didn't after), but after a few alterations and some tweaking i managed to get it to run pretty good. I put dual weber downdrafts on after trying in vain to get the original carbs back in shape, and they seemed to work pretty good. HERE"S THE PROBLEM: my Bavaria is a dog. The engine is in great shape (when I did valve spacing the view i got looked like the car was brand new (no exageration)) it runs nice and smooth (very sexy) but in fourth gear it's got nothing. It's all I can do to get it to do about 95 on flat open road. I think the problem lies not in the tuning & balancing of the carbs (which i finally have pretty close to right) but with the linkages. First off, the linkage pieces which attach the carbs to that bar which links the two together are gone. If anyone knows where i can get new ones, or a good way to fake it, please let me know. I drilled out some or the linkages from the old carbs to replace the broken ones, but am still looking for a better (more permanent) fix. I also think the problem may be that I don't have enough gas pedal action. I have scoured my haynes manual but it offers no help. If anyone knows how I can ascertain whether I've got it right or not (or if anyone wants to swap cars for a while to get the feel(ha ha)), again, let me know. Thanks, Matt
PS Cool Site, I love it.

The best car I have owned, bar none. A 1974, that would motor all
day at 130 MPH. We once baked a fuel pump in Bangor, Maine, late on
a Saturday afternoon. We figured we'd be there for a few days, but
along came a young mechanic who helped us hook up a pump from a '76
Dart. Yes a Dodge. We mounted it on the valve cover, and continued
our trip to southern Maine, before returning to Nova Scotia a couple
of days later. What a car!

Subj: 1973 Bavaria restoration

Hi, my name is Marc Grenier. I live in Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada. I'm glad to have found you guys. Your site and its different links are quite interesting. I must admit that at this point I'm a bit discouraged, and I don't think I want to finish my project of restoring a 1973 Bavaria. I bought my first 1973 Bavaria two years ago. Its original automatic
transmission had been changed to a 5-gear standard transmission (from a 528?..) to my driver's satisfaction. In the first year, I had a hard time finding parts, and I had to drive to the USA to get a few of them. Luckily, I found a second Bavaria for parts a year later, which I bought. I spent a lot of time restoring my dream car, rebuilding the
entire braking system, and improving the body which needed some work(and still does). Amazingly enough, I'm not missing any parts except for the original leather seats which are not (in both cars) in good condition. The motor is in great shape although I don't know its original mileage. To be honest with you, although I've invested close to 2,000$, I'm looking for a way to get rid of both cars. I now own a 1983
733i in mint condition and have lost interest in my Bavaria. I sincerely think it would be a waste to send both Bavarias to any scrap yard, and I don't just mean because of the financial loss, but mostly because a real BMW lover could probably continu the restoration or just be happy to get
his hands on so many good parts for a real bargain (750 US$). So if you could help find a good place to advertise my offer (I have pictures), I would really appreciate.

Thank you in advance.

hi its cam in calgary again.i bought bjorns 73 bavaria a couple of weeks ago.he never drove it.this is my second.i am in the process of changing the water pump and heater core.the water pump is removed (after removing the hood and rad).as of yet i dont have a manual for the car.can somebody please recomend one with wiring diagrams? also does the heater core come out from the engine compartment or under the dashboard?
i am going to remove the water lines from my carbs and install a manual choke.has anybody else done this?if the coolant gets the least bit low the fast idle kicks in and its kind of dangerouse.also ithink that the coolant takes a while to warm and the carbs might be running too rich on short trips.
i have heard that complete carb rebuild kits are no longer available (all of the gaskets and jets are but some of the pin bushings?are not)and when these wear the air leaks can really hurt performance.
i am considering webbers but dont think i can afford them yet.i live in a cold climate and have heard webbers can pose starting problems in freezing weather.i would like to hear fron somebody with experience on this.
has anybody replaced their points with an optical/solid state ignition?happy?how much did it cost?could you take something out of a different car?
my membership application will be coming soon.i dont own a computer with www capability so i access from my brother in laws great sign shop.thanks bro.it seems i dont remember to bring my cars vin etc with me when i come down here.
this site is almost as good as a bavaria.
thanks,cam

Hello BMW,

Volvo blue(sic) 74 bavaria

Whats up! It's hard to believe there is a place where I can find some quality information about my car; yes, I am certifiably crazy because I have owned this car now for almost six years and it has been from mpls, MN to Marietta, GA several times. However, it is getting old and it needs work. I would like some performance tips ie: suspention, changing to a manual trans from an auto, and also wheel upgrades. The car if very clean but i just want more performance. I am very attached to this car! HELP!

Thank You.

For Sale: (location = St Paul, MN) 1974 BMW Bavaria 3.0S USA Version VIN 2100625 Mfg Date 12/73, 4 speed manual; color metallic midnight blue; purchased Sep 1987 in MA from original owner. I have a record of everything ever done to this car since it left the factory -- almost everything is original parts. Has minor rust (garaged most of its life), has beautiful paint (was repainted some years back by a real pro). For those worried about overheating -- I replaced the radiator several years ago, and was about to replace the fan clutch as well, since it had 'locked up.' I altered the fan so that it would just 'free wheel' (spin freely) the whole time, and carefully monitored the engine temperature for a while to see what would happen (since a new fan clutch was expensive). That was several years ago, and I've never had a heat problem since -- including stop'n'go traffic in 95 degree heat. I think the secret has to do with a big, effective radiator and a fuel mixture that isn't too lean (not having an air conditioner probably helps too). Everything works fine on this car, except the seatbelt retractors are a little sticky, and the left rear door doesn't lock (it opens/closes just fine...it just doesn't LOCK). The engine does burn oil, but I figure that's a cheap way of keeping the muffler lasting forever. I just redid the brakes, including a bunch of new stainless steel lines. If a person wanted to spend any money on the car, I'd suggest a new windshield (small crack in a corner, and a small rock 'ding'). If anyone is interested, I can put a photo up on our web site (http://www.tringa.com). I'm thinking about $1500, but I've discovered that money hasn't always been the deciding factor for most of us when we get involved with these cars... Will be happy to answer question, ... HJ Schmidt (born in Bavaria, actually, in 1948!)

Hello Kelly and all other E3 fans. I visit this sight often and thoroughly enjoy doing so each time. I'm writing to save many of you money. I'm restoring a 74 bavaria and have many engine parts including a rebuilt head and rebuilt trans (auto), dual weber carbs, starter, air conditioning pump, and many other parts. I'm a college student and have held onto this car for almost two years now. It hasn't been on the road since I purchased it but I refuse to sell it. At this time I'm doing some modifications to this wonder. I'm sure all who visit have visited the sight on the "turbo" E3. I'm placing a Chevrolet 350 (yes, I apologize) that is currently being rebuilt to have approx. HP of 400. I will send pictures as this project progresses. Presently I'm out of funds until summer when classes are done. This will be a unique Bavaria indeed. If anyone is in need of parts please feel free to contact me. Stay tuned.

Hi. My husband just gave me a 1973 Bavaria for Valentine's
day. I'm trying to learn more about them now. I had a 1970
2800 some years back, but it was rusting out. This one
appears to be in great shape, but it's a standard, so I've
got some driving practice to do; I've not driven a standard
before. First of all, the wiper motor is noisy, even though
my husband took it out and grease the worm gear. Any advice?
A new motor is over $500 Canadian! Second, under heavy
acceleration, and at speed over 70 mph (as I crest a bump or
hill) there's a vibration and sort of grindind noise - not
too loud. Any ideas? Thanks. See you on the road.

Subj: handleiding BMW sedan 2000

Geachte Mevrouw, Mijnheer,

Great Page Kelly! I have my eye on a 76 3.0Si, the body sticker indicates it was made 4/76 and is a 3.0S, but the engine compartment sticker indicates it's a 3.0 Si, should I be concerned?

Just found your site via the SSR. Interesting. It would
probably be neat if you'd link to the SSR list, or at least
put a note up on where these BMW/Bavaria lovers could find
the best source of info/parts for these cars on the planet!
The Senior Six Registry is for all E3 lovers, and hosts a
list on the net as well as publishing a periodical booklet.

Anyone that loves the car should really be a part of the SSR.
You would not believe the amount of info, good humor (and
some not so good), and just general help that their list
provides.

To join, go to:

majordomo@acpub.duke.edu

and subscribe. Then join the SSR and get set for the best,
most informative flood of E3 info you could ever hope for!

FOR SALE: 1974 BMW 3.0s

Tan leather interior. The car just came back from the transmission shop. It is an Automatic, with power windows and four wheel disk brakes. In order to get it roadworthy it just needs service including, brakes, plug wires, valve adjustments, and the carbs adjusted. It still has the zenith carbs on it.

Overall, the car is sound and rust free except for a small hole, maybe about an inch in size, right below the rear door on the drivers side. The paint on the drivers side is also showing signs of the times (it has started to crack). We drove it last night around the neighborhood a couple times and it runs great considering the carbs need adjusting. It was loads of Fun; I hate the fact that I have to sell it... Hopefully, one day I will have the funds to buy another one.

Please email me for more info. Thanks

i once got the chills in a car like that one with the lights on......i drove around listening to some pseudo wife beater music with a self proclaimed wife beater hater.....i stayed on with this cat listening to him drool incessently about his former mooks called "hammer girls.." they all have similar stories, those girls. and those girls always get the guys with the cars. those girls made me do first timers just because of that car and his hair...his donny osmond, new kids on the block hair.......his hair, my legs, that seat.... i shaved my legs because the seats felt so good, even though they were cracked. i begged for mr. j-crew nightmare to turn on the heat in the dead of summer. instead we drove around the streets on spray painted 3-wheel bikes. we still got the attention i longed for but i didnt get to ride very far in that damned car. he didnt really ride in it either....no, he drove that momma. more than he drove me. i woke up to loons in his house talking smack about their carburetors and then i stepped out, fresh as a daisy begging for my coffee and a freakin' hammer so i could join the dead. the dead follow the bmw lover and put up with his carcinogenic smile. we pleasingly laugh as he walks another to get something the hammer cant lift....we'll silently wait while he runs down lumina to catch his peace..piece.....
we do it all for the jcrew papa and his fans. my only regret is not claiming him on my tax returns.......i could use the refund............ does sam walton know about your boycotted monopoly?

I am impressed with the following the E3 has here in the USA.My brother has had a 1976 3.0Si L-Jetronic(#3271092 RHD)in Malaysia for 20 years and always the question has been "what series?" The present franchise holders do not even know that such a BMW exists, since the mid-80s they have claimed not to have parts microfiches but it is great fun to leave the newer 3&5 series(not the V8s!)fumbling to keep up in the wake of a Si and have the owners complain to BMW that a big old car with shiny bumpers passed them like they were going backwards . It can still easily reach 215kph without attracting the attention of the cops(who patrol highways in Volvo 740 turbo wagons!how else do you move 3-4 oversize cops, sorry!)This car made BMW, who unfortunately seem to have conveniently forgotten about the E3.

Not exactly a Bav. question but as I've been looking for one and a 2002 as well, I hoped someone out there could answer this question for me. At exactly what point in America did the five mph bumpers show up? Was it every car imported in 1973 or 1973.5 or not until 1974? I could find it in Gov. data eventually but figured an aficionado could help me quicker.

Enjoy your site and visit frequently. I like the pictures and helpful tips. I have a '73 Bavaria that I purchased back in July of 1998. It is relatively clean, runs and starts well. Considering the age of car I believe it is in very good condition. It had some rusting on the doors and I had it painted in October of 1998. Previously owned an '82 320i that I decided to donate to charity. My wife is convined I am absolutely crazy for purchasing this old used BMW.

Hello,

My name is Bjorn and as of yesterday I am the owner of one 1973 bavaria in a sad state of affairs. My friend bought the car a month or so ago but he left it for scrap on his front street and the poor sap was notified yesterday that it would take 56 bucks to get it out of the impound lot. This is where I come in. Seeing as I have no money to spare and I am of to Australia in 21 days, I thought sure why not.

Here's my problem, what the heck do I with it, I mean I like it but is it going to cost me a fortune? The car runs and starts at minus 20, amazing since its been sitting so long. I am in Calgary. I know it has a short somewhere. The seats have been torn apart, I'm told it had seat heaters at one time. and the dash is rough. The heater controls are taken apart and so far (haven't spent that much time) I can't seem to understand how to put it back together. It came with a spare alternator and two more carbs. Yup, its got some rust.

Any tips on parts, service and anything else. It is in the paper to sell for thursday but after reading this I may hold on to it for another week.

Thank you, I look forward to a response.

Subj: a few questions on bavaria's
I recently purchased a 74 3.0s for $300 basically it was a sound car not but one spot of rust on the puppy and interior was clean and in all respect for the car nice.
well after i had the transmission replaced before i could drive it i realized that it had sat for a long time everything that could be out of adjustment is. (in order to drive it home i swear we turned the chokes a full 180 degree's. ) well anyway i know it needs work and i want to do it right but would like to know what the options are. so they say these cars over heat? well since this is going to be a daily driver what do i do to fix this problem? now for the carbs i have the stock zeniths. i would like the triple side drafts but cost is important. if you could tell me around how much and how difficult this conversion is going to be it would help my marriage out alot. next, what about a cam do i need to look into a replacement. i want power and a lot of it they say these cars can make it well i want all i can get out of it. next what kind of brake and suspension upgrades do i need to make after the carbs are installed. Any help you could be on these matters I would gladly trade my second born son for so keep me in mind.

thanks in advance

Really missed my old BMW 700, so got totally crazy and picked
up a 1974 Bavaria. All stock (including the times I think).
Usual rust in the usual places, but mechanically sound, new brakes
interior seats great, dash in one piece, orginal mats ok. Just need
some front fenders. This "Beast" joins a Jaguar XJ6 and a fleet
of 70's and 80's Skodas (no kidding, I have 5 of em). So that
alone qualifies me as crazy. All emails from fellow idiots will
be answered as soon as I can get out from under the cars.

I'm buying a 1972 3.0s- does not have the original engine.
How can I tell which engine it does have. Also car has
auto trans and is not running but engine and trans are
supposed to be good. All trim is there and leather is good.
Exterior is dent free and minimal rust. Has original alloys
and new tires. What is it worth?

I have a penchant for buying worthless European cars and loosing lots of money on them. The last was a silver '70 Bavaria. It looked great with the fake BBS alloys, low profile tires and air dam. I thought the ticking sound would mean a simple valve adjustment. I dropped $1,600 for the car, spent $300 to have the carbs rebuilt (still didn't work right), redid the brakes and ignition, then discovered it wasn't the valves ticking, it was the crank knocking. I ran out of time and money and had to unload it for $200. Someday I'll kick myself!

Lighten up Kelly! You've got a great site.

I've got a '73 3.0si which I purchased back in Apr 97 for five and a half thousand Aussie dollars. To date, I've sunken more hard-earned into it than it cost me to purchase it. But every time I take it out, I makes me feel that:
- every dime has been worth it and
- hell, let's spend some more to make it even better.

Mine has been upgraded in certain areas: 16" wheels from an 850csi, custom springs, Koni dampers and thicker sway bars front and rear. Mechanically, it is mostly standard except an LSD from an early 6.

A lot of work will be needed soon. The engine is slurping a lot of oil so it's either a rebuild or a newer unleaded engine off (say) an E34 535i. The 4-speed box will not be missed when I welcome a 5-speeder. Rust has started to appear in earnest so I might as well get a full-body respray.

I've always thought that E3 owners should be reasonably sensible. Thank God there are eccentric ones out there.

When the big straight six roars - especially when heel-and-toe before a tight corner - it is (almost) better than sex.

I was cruising the net to find some info on the bavaria, and I came across your web page, this is the most informative bavaria site I have come across plus entertaining, I am the proud owner of a 83 euro 635csi and a 75 3.0si and I love them both, I was stationed in the Father Land of BMW and my first experiance with the automaker was a Big rust color bavaria with 2 massive solex carb's ever since ive been hooked on bmw's, I agree to what you have stated on your main page about the style and how they could rival most car's on the market today. I have a question for you, my bavaria has those huge U.S bumpers which I would like to trash can for a set of euro bumpers, do you know of any after market vender or salvage yard's perferably around the N.C or S.C region?

First of all, could an E3 be said to drive like an oversized 2002? I was a little suprised to
learn that some E3 owners are snobbish about 2002s...it seems that the 2002
is more of a widely acknowleged classic than the E3s! (Unjustly so?) I have
read several comments which imply that the E3s handling is not quite as
nimble as a 2002, or the later 5-series cars. Do you share this
observation?

Handling is all-important to me, and I am quite happy the
2002's balance of ride quality (taut, but not punishing) and handling
(sharp, and mildly tail-happy.) So if an E3 is similar, just in a larger,
safer, quieter and faster package, I'd be interested in owning one.

Most E3s have power steering, right? What is that like in terms of
road feel/ feedback through the steering and how high are the boost/ assist
levels?

The E3 appeals to me because it is simpler and lighter than the
later 5 series cars, the styling is more pleasing (in my opinion) and it's
free of the unpleasant Yuppie associations that plague later BMW products.
It seems that the E3s aren't quite as well supported in terms of parts
availibility as 2002s (is this so?)

What's the rust situation like on the E3s? Any special problem
areas? Were (hoping against hope) any of the years of E3s galvanized?

I know that there are five speed conversion kits for the E3s, but I
was kind of hoping that the standard 4-speed car might be a bit taller
geared than a 2002. What kind of rpm is the engine turning at when you're
going 70? 80?

What would one expect to pay for a E3 in sound bodily condition,
but perhaps needing some mechanical attention?

Trivial point (and you're going to think I'm a real eccentric for
asking this) Are the E3 hoods front or rear hinged?

I have heard that water pumps and cracked cylinder heads are the
major mechanical problem areas...can you think of any other weak spots?

Hope I haven't been quizzing you too intensely. I appreciate your time
and enthusiasm...big or small, I think that there have been few other cars
made as nicely as the early '70s BMWs.

Does anyone know about a '95 model year Bavaria?? Someone is selling one for $1,100 and I'm wondering if it's stolen, trashed, or this guy is crazy. It's a black, 12cyl turbo w/ auto. It is completely loaded with options. Sounds like an 850 tome, but I don't know. Any ideas???

I currently own a 1981 320i and a 1990 325is (both in very nice shape). I grow more in love with the marque each day. BMWCCA member for some time. Recently met a fellow who has a 1971 or 1972 Bavaria. It's in his garage in Fl. and seems to be in very good shape, straight and clean. The motor has a spun bearing(which I assume is a bad main bearing). It has an automatic trans(eech!)plus all the options, air, self leveling struts and more. He will sell it to me for $1000.00 and ship it to me in Ind. for $200 additional,(he works for a moving and shipping co.) I have looked through all my recent Roundels to try to price this thing, it seems to be somewhat within reason. I have checked with the garage that does the work on all my cars(most excellent and not cheap)and their guess is to rebuild a 3.0 motor is 4,000 or maybe 2,000-3,000 to just repair the damage. My first reaction is to forget it as I could find another already running for less but on the other hand it's a quite attractive automobile and am not inclined to let it go by.

Please give me some guidance if you have a chance.

Thanks,

Scott Moore

Hello,

I happen to come upon a "BAVARIA" at a local police auction and seem to have brake problems, particularly in the master cylinder and proportionary valve area's. If their is somewhere I could get some help with parts or service, please let me know. Your site made me feel I have made a very good decison to have bought this car, but fight and fuss
with my other half to get rid of it.

Thanks for the inspiration...

not at all sure if purists on this site, who come here for purpose of ..well, car stuff i suppose.. might feel me a bit out of line with this, but the internet is fetish mecca of life, and to be truthful in manyways i find this site hotter than a perverted podiatrist viewing XXX toe sucking, anyday. come here today an i find ThaT car SPEEDING...wondering if it affects anyone else, or if i am more off than my phone since those people lost their sense of humor.
females being text mongers not visual, like stapled navel polygamous fixaDENTed men...really oughta consider kh more the erotic bard of this century than what apparently is the overall image you might come up with if ya combine that picture of the lad and his work.. a GAPboy with ambition to own used car lot in New Jersey, WHY does he look so bleak? WHERE is girlfriend with hammer? i keep on waiting to see, like all of you.
To be honest, i am just wasting time, embarassed by the truth of my fixation and the glare i see now -- that my monitor never did have before ( much as i can recall the lost years ). well out with it i suppose. PLEASE mr. BMWBb list the models from the year '71 that looked like that picture up there, by where you had me type my name. you wrote this could now be like classifieds... so i may be first, but i want to add a personal.. see my first time (don't make me say IT ) was in a white BMW.. and his name was Frank. it was Fort Lee across from THE city.. he really did care about me, and i really did love his car. i felt misunderstood by the other freaks i was hanging with then, and although they looked down at me for not fogging windows in vw bugs (long before they became bloated like some cheap kiddie pool toys )...so i left bmwfrank for mike and the corvette, well, never sat IN a seat of that corvette, i laid lil platform behind the seats, buddies got seats, if you can follow the logic of braindeath mechanic.( he actually did teach me not to drink and drive and turned it into a sculpture that i am certain is the prototype for the famous hair scrunchie )
FRANKFRANKFRANK BMW FRANK from F.L. in N. J. ... you had taste before the year i admit i was born in. just want to know if you have hair and stuff and if you cheated on me like my best friend Tracy claimed. If so was it IN that car? and what was that car? Last time i saw it, i also thought i saw an ancestral zebra on the George Washington Bridge. i know you are reading FRANK. well enough anger.. i been so happy since i opened up an let this site into my heart... i got a teensy COllectibe bmw sittin on top of my 21" monitor..its kinda lonely though, FRANK, since i offed my MAN by accident ( see dedication page, American Heart Assoc. and InfoWeb article heart disease an stimulants)..
i got memories, this page, and the pictue of BMWwebGAWDgapBOY, is ALL.. flyin speedin revolvin car stuff, it dont get any better for me sadly.

I am insane to keep this car around, and all of you are nutbars. However, I am gratefull for all of the help in TRANSFORMING my Bav, Gunter, from beat-up, oil leaking, smelly hunk in need of paint.....into a beat-up, oil leaking, smelly hunk in need of paint with a bigger motor and some odd parts here and there.

What does BMW stand for?

Someone told me it was "British Mammary Whore."

I refuse to believe that...at least the "whore" part.

73 Bavaria

Don't know if this is something you are willing to do, but let me tell you about a car that I have a line on (with pictures) and let me know what you think. My parents bought this car two years ago, and have had very good luck with it. No mechanical problems have reared its' ugly head, but they have put approx. $1500 into it (over and above their original $3500 purchase price) having the horn fixed, paint blemishes fixed, and felt window liners replaced (passenger and driver side). As far as drive train goes, the car runs and sounds very good. It has 120,000 on it, with a complete rebuild at the 90,000 mile mark. (The car has a very complete maintenance history, as it has had only 2 owners, and all maintenance has been done by the same mechanic).

Here is where I come into the picture. I plan on graduating in March, and I feel that I
deserve a nice present for myself. A little early, but life deserves these little joys when they come along. My parents say that they had it appraised for $4900, but will "let it go" for 4000. Having read your site, as well as the Senior Six Registry, I am under the impression that average ones go for 2-3, very good for up to 5, and not even the best will fetch 10. I feel very confident that this is a good car, but I have no standard of reference, at this is the first Bavaria that I have ever encountered.

I have gone over the car, and there are no cracks in the dash, interior is perfect, no fluid leaks, brakes do not squeal, and I can find no rust, though I am sure it is present. I specifically checked the strut towers, firewall, floor boards, rocker panels, and trunk.None that I could find. Well, I am enclosing six pictures that my parents have sent me. I would greatly appreciate it if you could browse them over, consider what information I have discussed (it is all that I know), and let me know what you think.

I am about 95% sure that I am going to make the purchase, but just don't know about the price in reference to what I have read in mentioned web pages. Please let me know what you think.

P.S. Please forgive my mothers reference to the car as "Beemer" in the jpg files!

I just bought a rust free 73 Bavaria for $750 that had been stored in a closed garage here in Los Angeles county for ten years. The car has only 119K on it, the body is in excellent condition and interior is in good condition. Car is an automatic, malaga with black vinyl interior (car wasoriginally verona), A/C, no S/R, stock alloys, dual webers.

Besides the obvious of changing all fluids, hoses, and fuel lines, what else do I need to do? Any advice on what I need to do before I attempt to start the motor that has been dormant for so long? Any advice is appreciated, this is my first venture into six cylinder BMW's, having owned several 02's for 17 years.

Diveshaft Universals

Hello whoever can help me, I've got a '72 Bavaria and the driveshaft universals are starting to go, not so bad that they're sloppy, but there is some detectable slack. I got new joints and discovered that it is basically impossible without a special jig of sorts and probably balancing the whole thing when completed. There are no "C" clips holding them in like other cars would have.

Has anyone out there ever done these u-joints and if so, where(I'm in the Boston area), and for what price

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much.

72 Bavaria

Hey...I imagine you are somewhat of a guru with BMW Bavarias. I am looking at a 72' 2800 Bavaria. 80,000 miles with some rust damage on doors and it is being sold for $1500.

Good Deal, Bad Deal ???? should I not even bother. The engine is running fine apparently. Does the price sound realistic or do you think it is a heap of junk?

Found your site while searching for BMW Bavaria info on Altavista and Excite.

Volvos vs a car that sings

Jeff found a 1973 3.0S (based on the VIN) with 68,000 original miles just SITTING at a gas station, unwanted, unloved. He bought it (actually exchanged a '64 Chevy pickup for it). The interior is so-so, brakes were locked, engine purrs, corners like a dream, repairable rust.

Background: I have driven a Volvo for twenty years (actually two Volvos: first a '70 sedan, now an '80 wagon). The Volvo has plenty of room for me, two large dogs, a tent, backpack, etc. It is built like a tank, runs like a top (between repairs), and bores me to tears each time I drive it. I have fallen in love with Jeff's car. It is beautiful. It is perfectly one with the road. Jeff, also a long-time Volvo driver, MAY be willing to part with the 3.0 for a very fair price (we are arguing over who loves it more).

First question (from Jeff): The 3.0S's front seats and front doors need to be replaced. There is a 4-door 530i in pretty good shape that just got dumped at a local junkyard. Will the seats and/or doors and/or other parts from the 530i fit the 3.0S?

Second question (from me): All things being equal (which they never are), would someone who can barely afford to keep a Volvo on the road be really sinking herself financially if she sold the Volvo and bought a car that sings to her soul?

Do you sell tablecloths?

I need no more that a dozen but even a few would be better than none at all; I have grown tired of eating on bare metal which I believe has given me a rather nasty complex in relation to cat walks and other metal structures that keep me from leading a normal like. Windshield wipers have also been giving me fits as of late.

Help if you can.
