MOONDOG MODS by Jean-Francios Lessard

kh ~ 2A3 Moondog 1. C1 is now a Solen at 2.2uF 650v

2 . Jeff suggests to Choke load the driver with a MQ EXO-010.

3 . Replace the grid resistor with a MQ BCP16 GC Ni

4 . Change the coupling caps (no choice if you go the grid choke route)

Thoughts - 11-26-07: If running a preamp that can swing 18-20V peak to peak, Jeff recommends removing the first stage, leaving one 6SN7. I'm currently running the Moondogs from a Creek Passive with the second stage hooked up. With the new 2.2uF at C1 and the vintage Philco 5R4GY rectifier, it's VERY open and lively, far better than earlier Passive experiments ~ kh

Plenty of room in this Moondog. After hearing a grid choke, you'll never go back to a resistor, even with the most esoteric selection on earth. The grid choke is the perfect device for a self bias SET amp. It gives the tube what it wants, a low DCR and a super high AC resistance. Makes the amp sounds more dynamic and lively. I know only one half of a 6SN7 is used for each tube. With my mod, you could pull out a tube. In anyway, if you don't like it, you just go like before. You would use only one half of a 6SN7 at total.

Your 6-7W output is clipped to the max. You just kill faster your 2A3 and get more clipping. Do the mod I suggest. Trust me.

I dont see the room for all the chokes unless I move a bunch of shit

I think there is room under the chassis after cleanup although the EXO-010 might be hard to fit in. It can probably be mounted sidways on your wood chassis.

It's possible to ditch C1 totally. If the voltage is still to high, that means the power transformer have really poor regulation. In that case, replace R13 by another choke, You'd have then a really nice PSU that would go choke-cap-choke-cap. It would be quiet as hell and choke input PSU are what I like the best. I tell you, it's possible to do much more with your Moondog.
