Doug
Jacobs had something, then let it go...His 1972 Bavaria
This is Doug Jacobs' 1972 Bavaria,
which has an interesting history. I'll let Doug give it to you in his own
words - Notice the last sentence as well. By the way, it's not often you
can be the third and fifth owner of the SAME car!:
" Yeah, it's a 1972, about 190K on the car right
now. I'm the third owner (or fourth, depending on how you look at it). The
car was originally Fjord Blue. Owner number one is unknown to me, but bought
the car new in the Bay Area and by the late 70's had racked up 96,000 miles
when he cracked the original head.
The second owner bought it with the blown motor and had these two old German
brothers in Sacramento (who were supposed to be experts) rebuild the motor.
The second owner had the car then until I bought it from him in 1995 - he
had subsequently moved to Chicago and put another 60K on the car. The second
owner had the car painted this later model blue, as well has having a Dinan
Stage 2 suspension installed, 5 series slotted brakes and he kept
the car immaculate (of course, the BBS are not stock as well).
When I got the car it had never seen a winter, I drove it for two years (year
round) and rust started to appear (one rocker panel and the right rear fender
well). When I needed another car in order to commute 70 miles a day, I sold
it to a good friend who drove it in summers only. I just recently bought
the car back from him. It needs some cosmetic rework; the paint is fading
and it needs some rear brake work, but all in all it runs fantastic.
Since I am driving a total of 12 miles to and from work now I have bought
the car back and it will be my daily driver."
Doug plans on getting "another body" to store away for this
machine when rust begins to have its way. Of course, we all say that kind
of thing...and you know how that goes. Doug hopes to have his own page for
his car but appears to be just as entranced with his classic BMW R75/5 bike.
Here is a shot of it standing after a long haul through the Catskill Mountains.
