Details and the story of "George"
I
purchased the car about ten months ago. I am selling it because
I have purchased a new BMW and also, I don't have time to drive
it. The car has original 45,000 miles on it. I bought it when it
had original 43,800 miles. This car used to be a show car.
History
An older gentleman bought this car in 1972 in Virginia and at some
point in time relocated to Atlanta. He died in 1991 and the car
was bought by Alpharetta Motors (I think thats the name). The car
sat on the show room floor for couple of months and was bought by
the last owner, Dave, an Atlanta resident. Dave drove the car a
bit but then it sat in his warehouse for over two years.
I found
out about the car from George as Dave decided to sell the car in
1999. George has done most of the work on the car. Who is George you ask?
George's full name is George Doughtie and he has raced IMSA and other
professional races. He is a BMW and ASE certified mechanic. Actually,
George is one of the very first BMW mechanics in the United States.
Information
I have inspected the car in detail. I used George's lift to thoroughly
look under carraige. The car does have original mileage. A little
test George and I performed confirmed it. George was synchronizing
the carbs and had the air cleaners and housing off. The engine vent
hose coming from the top of the valve cover was disconnected. George
started the car. I took a piece of paper and put it a few inches
from the engine vent. Guess what, the piece of paper did not move,
NO BLOW BY! NONE! The car had 43,800 miles then. If it had 143,500
miles, I am positive I would have seen some blow by.
The car
has the upgraded later model radiator and fan with clutch, installed
pretty recently it seems like. I went ahead and installed a 71 degree
thermostat and changed all the coolant hoses. I have also replaced
some of the fuel lines.
George
did a lot of work on the engine to get it going again. I had to
kind of break the car in again after not having been driven for
so long. I changed the engine oil to 20W50 Valvoline Racing for
the summer, Redline MT90 in the transmission and Redline 75W90 in
the diff. I think I might change the diff oil to Redline 80W140,
per George, it has a a lot better film and gear protection is superior.
The car has a new battery, carbs are synced, new plugs, point, timing
adjusted and whole lot more. George charged $1000.00 for it.
Rust?
You Find It, I Shall Drop The Price
After exhuastive search, I found surface rust of about 1 sq. inch
area under the car, below the back seat. It has been resolved with
POR-15. The tip of the bonnet has a few very minor chips, but I
have not fixed them yet. I want to use them as proof that the paint
is original. If looked very closely, the steel metal can be seen
below the paint chips.
Interior
As you can see from the pictures, its flawless, shockingly flawless,
one of the reasons for me to buy the car. It has the original whicker
style woven mats. I have them covered with clear plastic mats, so
as not to destroy the original. The seats are immaculate, no cracks,
wrinkles, etc. The steering is free of grim, even minor cracks.
The console and shifter console are clean and free of any scratches
anywhere, no cracks there either.
Everything
works in the interior. The a/c needs recharging though.
Exterior
The second reason to buy the car. Unbelievable...! Wheel caps in
perfect condition, new tires, all bumper rubber molding in perfect
condition. The rear rubber molding has a minor crack, but I have
a replacement for it. The signal and brake light plastic covers
are clean and bright, no fading at all. Head lights work and are
the original head lights. The front grill is perfect. There are
no cracks in any of the glass around the car and is all original.
The molding all the way around the car, halfway down the doors,
is original and in perfect condition.
Trunk
Now that was a surprise, scratchless and perfect.
I will
be posting further pictures of the car soon. Please email me if
you have any questions.
